ABOUT CHAU EE

A construction, energy and infrastructure, and international arbitration specialist, Chau Ee acts for parties from conception through completion of a project life cycle providing an unique offering of “cradle-to-grave” project life-cycle advice including dispute management with a particular emphasis on:

  • project development / project counsel advice including contracts procurement such as advising, negotiating and drafting concession agreements, project agreements (EPC/EPCIC and its variants, and O&M) and ancillary contractual documentation;

  • dispute management (risk mitigation, dispute avoidance, appropriate dispute resolution encompassing conciliation, dispute boards (DAB/DRBs), mediations); and

  • international arbitration seated in Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Doha, Dubai, Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh City, London, Paris, and Singapore among other jurisdictions, conducted under institutional rules administered by leading international arbitral institutions, or ad hoc arbitration rules.

Chau Ee has been consistently ranked as a leading lawyer in Construction in major international legal directories such as Lexology Index (formerly Who’s Who Legal) in Construction as Thought Leader, global leader, and national leader for Southeast Asia, Legal 500 Europe Middle East Africa, Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Chambers Global, and Chambers Asia Pacific.

Chau Ee accepts dispute board member and arbitrator appointments.

Chau Ee, a Singapore national, has lived and worked in London, Dubai and Beijing. He is well versed in Asian and Western law firm language and culture with an impressive range of multicultural law firm experience at partner level:

  • earlier in his career, he was a Europe Middle East Asia (EMEA) London and Dubai partner of US multinational law firm Reed Smith (that had a transatlantic merger with a leading London headquartered international law firm) where he held administrative, management and leadership roles including office managing partner, head of practice and member of the global leadership team as well as being one of the founding members of its Dubai office, and established and led its Middle East Construction & Engineering practice;

  • when he initially returned home in early 2014, he rejoined Big Four Singapore law firm Drew & Napier LLC's market leading Dispute Resolution practice (where he trained and spent the formative years of his career) as a director, head of Construction & Engineering group and co-head of Projects Energy & Infrastructure group;

  • thereafter, as an international partner of Asian-headquartered top tier international law firm King & Wood Mallesons (KWM), he was a partner of Big Six Australian firm Mallesons in KWM’s Singapore office and a partner of Red Circle Chinese firm King & Wood when he was based in KWM’s Beijing office; and

  • upon his eventual return to Singapore in late 2019 (and until most recently), he was a Singapore based partner of UK top 25 international law firm Addleshaw Goddard where he established and led its nascent Construction & Engineering practice in Asia.

Besides a law degree, Chau Ee also has an MSc in Construction Management (Project Management), which he attained via distance learning. As part of his MSc requirements, he submitted a dissertation which evaluated the use of FIDIC’s 1999 Silver Book in major international infrastructure projects.

Chau Ee is a past chairperson of the Society of Construction Law (Singapore) (2020-2022).
